What's a Papasan Chair?
Papasan chairs have been called many names, such as dish chairs and moon chairs. Comprised of a round, bowl-like seat with a separate cushion and a slightly angled, drum-shaped base usually made of rattan (you can also find them made of wood, wicker, plastic, and metal), papasan chairs are infamous for their comfort. The separation of base and bowl allow you to arrange the chair to the angle of the most comfort to you - and readjust it on a whim. With a variety of cushion styles, you can customize your own papasan chair to your liking, or even get different cushions for different moods. Never has a cozier, more versatile piece of furniture been invented.
Coming to America
Introduced to the United States from the Philippines in the 1960's, papasan chairs have gained popularity ever since, starting out in dorm rooms and apartments, and breaking into modern homes around the globe. Peaking in popularity in the mid-seventies, papasan chairs were seen all over the mainstream, from sitcoms on television, to movies, right into real homes and lives. Currently, the popular chairs are part of a retro style that's still prominent in American culture. Part of the attraction of papasan chairs is their ability to fit any decor - simply swap the cushion for another style, pattern, or design to change the look. There are hundreds of different types of cushions, and even more cushion covers. With a minimal investment; you can change the look and feel of your entire room.
Papasan chairs have become so popular, in fact, that you can even find them in bigger, and smaller, sizes. Mamasan chairs are similar to papasan chairs, but a bigger version - a great fit for two. Junior papasan chairs are perfect for kids. You can even find baby papasan, or 'babysan' chairs - swings and bouncers sized much smaller - made especially for the infant set. As you can see, there are perfect papasans for the entire family.
